I use a Pop Rivet tool that I got at the local hardware store. It takes
different sizes of rivets and worked well on all the snaps on my Spit.
The only allowance for the snaps is having to find a couple of small
washers to put onto the rivet shank in order to force it all the way
down into the depression of the snap.

Look for Vinyl Top cleaner at the local auto parts store.

THey are called "Lift-the-Dot" fasteners. I would leave them in place
because they provide a more secure fastening than snaps.
