I can't believe that you have all missed out on the easiest method. Remove the starter. Using a _large_ screwdriver, wedge the tip of the screwdriver between the teeth of the ring gear and the mounting flange of the starter. This will keep the crank from turning whilst loosening the bolt. You can also use this method for tightening the bolt back up when you have changed the timing chain.
