The alignment tool is a dummy transmission shaft that aligns the Clutch=
disk
hole to the pilot bearing in the crankshaft. After they are still alig=
ned,
you may have to rotate the transmission shaft a little to get the splin=
es on
the disk and shaft to line up. And yes, it often requires a little pus=
hing,
jiggling, and rocking. None of this is easy while laying in a Spitfire=
footwell, either.

Subject: Spitfire clutch job
My weekend project this weekend was a clutch replacement on my friends
spitfire.
After pulling out the transmission and replacing the clutch (No problem=
after
we
figured out how to properly lift the engine/trans assembly). We have h=
it a
difficult spot. The new clutch is in, but we cannot get the transmissio=
n to
slide in. Is there any trick to this, or just lots of pushing, jigglin=
g, and
rocking? Also we have a clutch alignment tool, which we used while bol=
ting in
the new clutch, but are unsure of what it actually does. Can anybody e=
nlight
me? I'd like to get the gargare space back for my own spitfire.
