If brake fluid is so awful, why do they use it in brakes?

You're quite right, conventional brake fluid will destroy the components in
relatively short order. Somewhere, I've got a pair of brand new rear brake
cylinders that a previous owner filled with conventional fluid and plugged
the opening ... they are totally ruined.

But I've had good luck using DOT 5 brake fluid as a long term preservative
for brake components.
