Inch,

you didn't say if the levels were self leveling or not... or if the transit
has horizontal vials...

if the levels are considered "self leveling" all you have to do is get the
bubble in the outside circle of the vial and it will center itself...

first...make sure your legs are tight and securely pushed in the
ground...if it has 3 adjusting screws... level in one direction with two
screws..hold one in each hand and tighten one as you loosen the other..
tighten the opposite screw from the end with the bubble... so if the bubble
is at the right end of the vial... tighten the left screw and loosen the
right screw... but using equal amounts so that the screws are both snug.
When you have that side 'roughly' leveled ( bubble is at least close)...
walk around to a position 900 from where you were and use the two screws
now facing you to do the same thing. You can do this by just leaning
around, but it's easy to kick a leg or move the base and you have to start
over. Adjust the other 'side' again tightening/loosening in unison till
it's 'roughly level' .

then back to the first side and fine tune it... then back the the 900 side
and fine tune it...

sounds like a lot of work but once you get the hang of it... it takes less
than a minute...

If you have 4 leveling screws on the transits or levels it's even easier
since you're actually leveling on two planes instead of trying to level
with cross ways screws on a triangle base...

make sense ???
this is easier to show someone than to describe !!!

TIME ... it's what keeps everything from happening all at once !
