This subject has been discussed before on the list and if memory serves me
(always an issue after 50) the consensus was to adjust valves with the
engine at operating temperature, but not running. Search the archives for
this discussion.

Thriftmaster and Loadmaster were not primarily truck designations, rather
they were engine designations. The 216 engine was a Thriftmaster and the 235
(prior to the introduction of the new 235 in 1954?/55 thru 1962) was the
Loadmaster.

The pair of emblems as you describe would have been on a 49 thru early 51
hood. Sometime in 51, they dropped the Chevrolet and just used the 3100 thru
1952. The style of the 3100 then changed for 53 and 54. Check out my emblem
