Yes, that would be a good test, but a magnet will stick to stainless if
it is of the "400" series (different nickel content), but not to types
304 or 316 which are the most common. So the magnet test is pretty good
but not 100% foolproof.
Wally - no metallurgist either but work with stainless steel in a
nuclear welding shop.
