I know at the East 03 they asked us specifically for our final drive ratio (i.e.
sprocket sizes) and said that we can't touch them after safety.
Also, I believe [take that as a disclaimer] that any change in the vehicle
configuration must be made by the driver from the cockpit i.e. shifting gears
in a
tranny is fine, but taking out the master link of a chain and swapping it
between
two permanently mounted sets of sprockets could be a no-no. (although it
wouldn't
hurt to submit a rules question to the new site about this - they're pretty good
about answering them this year).
I guess if you planned to shift gears like a bicycle that would work. Also, I
saw a
pretty sweet setup from an old West Virginia car where they made use of what
looked
like a shifter fork and dog clutches from a manual transmission. Two chains were
mounted, one with a high ration, one with a low - the driver could shift between
them via the dog clutch. Very clever. I'll send you pic.
