Assume the tank is a regular cuboid and it will be close enough. The 
stick probably won't go vertically down but that shouldn't matter, 
half-way down the stick from level with the top of the tank is still 
half a tank, and so-on.  As an American 71 it should have a 
capacity-limiting tank, it depends on how the gauge has been calibrated 
as to where that shows when the tank has been filled and allowed to settle.
