Bob,
Not fully true. When restoring the GT in the period of 1990 =E2=80=93 2000,=
I took the pump apart and polished the contact points shing bright.
I think the car made some 15,000 miles after it came onto the road again in=
2000.
15,000 miles for me is not really reliable, certainly not compared with mod=
ern cars. I once drove an Audi A6 model 2000, which car never had a pump fa=
ilure over 343,000 kilometers =3D 214,000 miles.
Cheers,
Hans

Onderwerp: Re: [Mgs] Fuel pump failure
Hans,
Good on you for 50 years on the pump. Into my 1972 GT, tomorrow, goes i=
ts third, as the second failed last week, at ten years and 25,000 miles. I=
have never been successful with replacing diaphragm and points. Well, succ=
essful in that the pumps did not leak, but they would not pump.
Installed in my GT is an auxiliary pump, wired to an unused rocker swit=
ch on the console. When the engine falters, moving the switch brings the au=
xiliary pump into service and engine runs well again.
Running on the auxiliary pump, we drove in the CT Triumph Club=E2=80=99s=
British Reliability Run. 906 miles were added to my odometer. All cars tr=
avelled reliably and successfully, except for one that had a Weber carb, wh=
en its throttle return spring broke.
Bob
Dear listers,
Two days ago we went for a nice Indian Summer drive with the GT.
The GT recently had been MOT tested (the very final one, as next year the c=
ar will be 50 years old and the MOT test is compulsory anymore).
After a visit at a nice terrace at a lake with some drinks, I tried to star=
t the GT again, but the starter cranked without success.
We quickly found, that the original SU pump failed.
As I had no spare pump with me, I had to call the road services, who made a=
temp fix by adding an extra pump in series.
Now my question is what is best for the final repair.
New set of points =E2=80=93 available via Moss Motors a.o.
Convert to electronic points? =E2=80=93 Is in backorder @ Moss now.
Replace the diaphragm as well? The diaphragm still looks fine.
Any experiences?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Hans
