The ones I've seen use a peg in the handle and a cam action to press a bar across the contacts. Remove the handle after that and it will release the connection. Possibly you could cut the shank off the handle and use a length of hex bar or something to join the two pieces, and leave the shank in the switch when you remove the handle in the 'on' position.
