Keeping the stock transmission is the way for a real purist to go.  If you
only need first and reverse to get off and back on the trailer then you
don't need the 5 speed.  If I'm going to drive a couple thousand miles on
modern roads to and from MG 2006 then I'll take the 5 speed.

'46 TC with (gasp) an alternator and only cost is preventing a 5 speed here
'59 MGA with (gasp) a 5 speed
