An easy way to test for leaks is to use a bicycle tire's inner tube. Cut the
tube and attach the cut ends to the cooler's in/out ports. Apply some air
pressure via the tube's valve stem then dunk the item into a bucket of water
(kid's pool works good for larger items like a radiator). The inner tube
gives you a supply of air pressure while you search for tell-tale bubbles.
For a used oil cooler, I'd suggest flushing with solvent before use and then
changing the engine's oil & filter after a short drive (say 100 miles).
