Heater Control Knobs - There Must be a Trick

There must be a trick to getting the heater control knobs off. It's a '63 
MGB. The dash is out of the car and I want to take the knobs off to get the 
controls off. Should be a simple thing but they won't budge. Haynes says "press 
the 
plungers in the shanks of the heater control knobs and pull the knobs off". 
Yea, right - what plungers?
