Whatever you paint it with, be sure to clean it well and prime it first.  The
things called self etching primers are good for this (rattle can variety).

I would choose a satin finish if painting this way.  It's too tough to get a
consistent and durable gloss.

However, if you do want a gloss, consider rustoleum.  If brushed on carefully,
in multiple thin coats, the brush marks will melt in and it will be very
durable.  It dries slowly, like overnight between coats, but it will last a long
time.  And that part of your engine will not get hot enough to damage it.
