Slop should be easy enough to check, just remove the dist cap and waggle the
shaft in all directions. How many times did you turn the engine and check
the timing on each cylinder? Did you keep turning it forwards very slowly
and stop as soon as the points opened or did you have to turn the engine
back a bit at any time? Could just be a poor measurement, or if it changes
on all cylinders could be a loose connection. Even 10 degrees advanced on
one cylinder won't damage anything if you run the engine just for the
purposes of checking the dynamic timing on each cylinder and see how much
'wobble' there is. Even then in my case such wobble as there was has been
down to a slack timing chain and not the distributor.
