As I mentioned before the solenoid closes off the port from the manifold but
opens the port from the distributor to atmosphere to allow any existing vacuum
in the capsule to dissipate. Bypassing the solenoid will give you better
cruising economy in 3rd, if you travel in heavy traffic or very twisty bits
frequently for example, but then you may get the surging that Clausager
mentions and will be most noticeable in 1st and 2nd.

Subject: Re: TCSA & Vacuum advance woes
Now I'm a little confused...I thought the solenoid was either open (in 4th
gear) or closed. How does hooking up the vacuum lines reversed change its
operation? In any case, I'm planning on reconnecting the lines to my solenoid
(disconnected by a PO) again and I'm now wondering which way round it should
be connected? Does the port pointing at the manifold connect to the manifold
and the port pointing at the distributor connect to the vacuum advance? That
seems the logical choice. Or...should I bypass the solenoid completely and
just go directly to the distributor?
