Blake, he has been driving the car daily now for over 2 years. He has done
all the maintenance and most of the repairs himself, with just my guidance.
This has included converting from the single Zenith carb to twin SU HIFs,
replacing the steering boot covers, and all his general maintenance.
Besides keeping a full class schedule, he works part time for his spending
money.
I agree he needs to learn to take care of his car, but in this case he has
already proved that he is taking care of it. If I can find him a connector,
he'll install it when he's home for spring break. If I can't find a
connector, we'll work together to come up with another solution to install
the correct switch. Through my interest in LBCs he has gained a real
appreciation for British Cars, which I hope he'll pass on to his kids,
when/if he has some. There have been numerous days that I've been out in
the garage working on the cars that he came out asking to help. I have very
fond memories of us working together on various projects. I wouldn't trade
these for the world. If he needs my help I'll gladly give it to him.

Of course he (my son) threw away the old headlight switch, with the
connector still attached. I bought a new switch and went to install it

My brother's sons went through three different cars in three years.
'Dad', and sometimes uncle, was always having to do the work on those
cars: new U-joints, valve job, thermostat, some oil changes, etc.
Finally 'Dad' just said enough. The kid picked up the last car and
drove it 100 miles back to school when it 'quit' after 'Dad' had used it
part of the winter. The 'kid' walked away from the car and has been
afoot for the last 2 years.
My brother, 'Dad', and I learned to do it all by ourselves. We lost our
father while both of us were in high school. IMO, let the 'kid' figure
it out for himself and suffer the consequences of his own actions. If
he doesn't have enough interest besides pouring in gas and oil, then
perhaps he, or she, should be afoot.
