First off, thanks to all who replied. I'm trying to think through the
various senarios to resolve the problem. As far as I can tell, this car
is pretty much 100% stock. It's all there, unchanged, in incredible
condition.
I'm inclined to keep the car as original as possible, or at least not
do anything that can't be restored to original condition. Having said
that, I've been advised to remove the catalytic converter, and change
the carb out for a weber or other configuration. The car is exempt from
emissions testing.
Now, as a theoretical question, if I were inclined to remove the cat
converter, what would be involved? Someone told me I could get a
"test pipe" which replaces the converter. Another opinion was that I should
replace the exhaust manifold with one for a 1974 mgb, which was not fitted
with a converter.
If either method were employed, would anything else need attention, for
example, air pump, gulp valve, etc?
What I want to accomplish is to remove the fire hazard, and hopefully
improve the performance.
I will check the basic parameters to ensure that everything is set-up
properly before making any drastic changes to the car, but the cat
converter really worries me.
I would be happy to keep the ZS carb setup without the converter if it
will run well like that...
