I just delt with this on Sunday. I put in a new radiator (OE) and was
shocked at how easy the old grommet and thermal switch came out. What was
holding it in? Maybe a stray Lucas gremlin from the inside? Anyway, seeing
as it never had the clip, which by the way was for the '80 MG, I figured it
would stay in OK and used a new grommet. Wrong! Popped right out after
radiator was pressurized. I do plan on ordering the '80 clip but here's what
I did in the interim:
I positioned the upper radiator hose clamp (American style) so it was
directly behind the thermal switch and the screw tightener was facing toward
the radiator/switch. I cut a piece of hose (heater, I think) which had an
ID large enough to fit over the two-wire connection of the thermal switch,
but small enough not to fit over the OD of the switch. The length of the
hose is a tight fit between the switch and the upper hose clamp. Slipped the
hose over the two-wire plug, plugged in the switch w/grommet, then slid the
hose down to cover both, then pushed it into position. Works great!
