If the ignition light did not come on, then you need to check this circuit
first. Some cars are wired such that current must flow through the ignition
light (and hence cause it to light up) for a short time BEFORE the alternator
will begin putting out any current.

Your charging problem COULD be as simple as a blown ignition light bulb!
