Zach,
Although I have HS4's, I also have the Y type piping. It should connect to
fittings just beyond the butterflys on the carbs (between each carb and
intake manifold) and is used to recover and burn excess blowby gasses rather
than dumping them to atmosphere (emmissions thing). You don't say what year
car you have but on mine the piping originates at the front tappet cover.
Inside this cover is a rough filter medium similar to steel wool. If it gets
clogged with grunge over the years it can allow pressure to build which may
explain your blue smoke and possibly why the engine runs rough when
connected. Some listers have purchased a product called "Chore Girl" which
seems to be a good substitute for the original steel wool.
