AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB DEVELOPS ROADWAY USAGE SENSORS

Current U.S. traffic monitoring systems consist of inductive loops,
piezoelectric switches, and road tube sensors. But if permanent
installation is not done when the highway is built, the sensors have
to be retrofitted at greater expense, and when highway repairs are
done, they must be replaced at added cost. So the Ohio Department
of Transportation asked the Air Force Research Lab Information
Directorate's Information Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air
Force Base to design a low-cost non intrusive sensor for measuring and
classifying vehicular traffic over multiple-lane roadways.

The researchers came up with a dual-beam laser system that detects
vehicles under various highway conditions and then processes and stores
the signals for later analysis. The Multi-Lane Traffic Monitoring
sensor (MLTM) permits low cost portable or permanent setup along a
roadway without costly construction, maintenance, traffic disruptions,
or hazardous situations for highway personnel. It has expandable
capabilities and meets the advanced requirements of the Federal
Highway Administration and the Ohio Transportation Department.
