Bob,
I replaced the rear springs on my '72 GT a few months ago. It also
seemed about two inches higher in the rear than it should be, assuming
that the chrome strip should be level.
Some suggested that lowering blocks on the rear springs would be
appropriate, and I went to my NAPA store to get some. They didn't have,
and sent me to a spring shop to have the shackles and blocks made.
At the spring shop, the manager came out and looked at the car. He
mentioned that he had driven an MGA all through college and several years
of adult life. He looked at the car and asked if I would lift the front
bumper.
I did. It came up about an inch, maybe more, very easily. He then
lifted the front bumper while I looked at the car. When he lifted the
front it came up about an inch also, but I noticed that the rear seemed
to settle at the same time so that the car was almost level. The spring
guy explained that one should replace all the springs at the same time,
as they all settle to a degree and the replacement of springs at one end
makes evident the settling of the springs at the other end.
New front springs are in my office now, awaiting my getting time to
rebuild the front end.
