I had the same problem with my '77 B... check for disintegrated transmission
mounts. This caused the trans in my car to shift about somewhat, causing a
clunk when put into first gear and to pop out of third when letting off the
throttle.
I also just replaced the slave cylinder on my car, and yes, it's a matter of
unbolting the old one, installing the new one, then bleeding the air out of
the system, but, if your car is anything like mine, check the fluid in the
master cylinder for contamination. Mine was very bad, and when I replaced
the fluid I found that the system would not hold pressure due to wear in the
master cylinder. The symptoms of hydraulic failure, by the way, are that it
is difficult if not impossible to engage first or reverse with the engine
running.
