The round boot secured with the metal ring is the clutch slave cylinder
boot. There is also the other boot (more ovalish) that fits into the
transmission bell housing itself. The slipping out of third gear, and
possibly the first gear clunk, are more indicative of a problem and/or wear
in the transmission.
The oil leak is probably the rear engine seal? This is more of a design
feature so your car can mark its turf. Really : )
