Tru disconnecting the tach and hard brake it again. Alfa Romeo's would do
this when the tiny screws would fall out of the face of the tach, bounce
around in the bottom of the tach case and intermittently connect the tach
face with the case of the tach thereby shutting off the ignition system.
Don't know about Datsun roadsters but something like this could be happening
here.
