Ouch. If you look through said spring, can you see a vertical steel shaft? I
hope so. This is the valve stem. The cracked 'washer' is the Valve spring
retainer. If you can't see the valve stem, then the valve has dropped down
into the combustion chamber and what you are hearing is the piston slamming
the valve around inside the cylinder and into the combustion chamber. Go
take another look and _don't_ run the motor again! :)
