Tony, The quickest way to tell if the engine is a 3-main is by the presence of a mechanical tachometer drive. All 3 mains used in MGB's had them. If it is there, it is located on the drivers side at the back of the block where the rear plate bolts to the block, about 6" or so above the mating seam of the oil pan and block.
