Years ago I used to drive from Albany, NY to DC every spring for a
technical meeting with my AH Sprite.

A year ago I drove from Danbury, CT to Waynesboro VA.

I would avoid the Parkway particularly if you hit it during rush hour.
The NJ turnpike is not fun either. The turnpike has a lot of big truck
traffic. If it rains while you are on the turnpike find a parking lot
and wait until it is over.

If I were you I would look at taking 84 over to Scranton, PA and then
I-81 south. Leave I-81 at Haggerstown and come into DC from the west.
It might be a little longer but it is a safer route for a small car.
You could also look at taking the Skyline drive for part of the trip.

There is some beautiful country between MA and DC but you won't see
much of it the way you are planning.
