Personally I really think the only way is to look for a big lump between the
gearbox and the prop-shaft.  Non O/D cars have a slim, tapering tube in that
position.  Unfortunately the yellow wire is in all cars, whether originally
equipped with an O/D or not, and a non-original-O/D car could have an had
one added, and indeed an originally equipped car could have had it taken
away.

BTW, before the shift knob switch a column stalk operated the O/D, and
before that there was a switch on the dash.
