Well, Neil, not bad! You found a reference to the shims being under the
center posts only, but not the reason why. So, 5 points on a scale of one to
ten..........

To win the trip to Hawaii, now track down the engineer who came up with this
odd idea and discover his reasoning.......

(I've always assumed it was some scheme to exert a tad more pressure in the
center of the head to prevent the almost universal coolant weep from between
the head and the block down over the engine's I.D. tag)
