od & tranny mating

How might a young sprout such as myself get the transmission (4 synchro)
and overdrive (LH) back together?  I can't seem to get them to line back
up after attempting to replace the seal between them.  Even when the
shafts are aligned and the variable-thickness bearing thingy against the
spring-loaded thingy, it won't go in...has about 3/4" to go.  Thanks.
