Gentlemen: Had a '72 MGB in today (the owner returning some borrowed tools) which has had ENTIRE front end (except mounting member) rebuilt - even the inner swivel bars (one had a crack) and he was complaining of similar noises. Knelt down and eyed as he started & backed up - thought I saw exhaust pipe move --- raised bonnet - found one head pipe to manifold stud/nut-bolt/nut not EVEN around and the corner of the head pipe fractured (i.e. ear missing) but with just enough snugness to keep exhaust noise from happening.
