>Two quick items. Since the dwell meter didn't show any problems when
the engine broke up, I think we can assume that spark is not the problem
(you've changed the coil once already I believe). That leaves fuel or
timing.
I would (with the engine idling) advance the timing by moving the
distributor about 30 degrees (distributor movement) and see if it mow
revs if so the advance mechanism is not working. If no change is notice
bring the distibutor back to the original setting.
Next this vehicle has Z-S CD carb right? Remove the cover and check the
diaphram for leaks (or rev the engine and watch the piston to see if it
moves all the way up). If it is the problem may be fuel supply (I
suspect this since choking the engine seems to help)

Christopher,
Thanks for the message. Well, I can now get it to rev over 3500,=
in the garage at least, and also see the timing marks advance - by
richening the mixture. Trouble is, it's still backfiring, etc on the roa=
d.
If I go more rich with the carbs, then there's black smoke out the pipe =
at
idle.
It's got twin SU's. No diaphram. I've just gone back to the
garage, started the beast up and watched the pistons in the SU's go up a=
nd
down yanking on the throttle cable - the action looks smooth, and they bo=
th
go to the top. I can get over 4000rpm, according to my dwell meter/ rev
counter in the garage, though I get a bunch of BLUE smoke out the exhaust=
=2E =
(I can also get BLACK smoke by richening the jets 3 flats). If I go out
for a drive it soon starts backfiring and no go over 3000rpm. I suppose
it's breaking down "under load"
Does this tell you anything. This MG does burn/leak a bunch of
oil, but the compression is not bad (approx 140 - 150 on all cylinders) a=
nd
I don't normally see blue smoke. (Then again, I'm not usually looking at=
the exhaust !!)
Regards, Adrian (Breaking down under load)
