Hi Doug,
  I don't think that your problem is the timing chain.
  I believe that your problem is the position of the dog that drives the 
dizzy off the cam. (This has been a kookie night, maybe I am having a 
kookie idea.)
  You may want to set your engine at tdc on the compression stroke of #1.
  Then, check the rotor for its position in the dizzy.
  If it doesn't match your expectation for its position, pull the dizzy 
out. Now remove the drive dog for the dizzy and reinstall it in an 
orientation that satisfies the workshop manual and you. 
  Reassembly is the  reverse of removal.
  You should now be able to insert your plug wires in the dizzy towers in 
a text book fashion.
  OR, just leave it like it is now to save effort ;).
