Thanks for the responses regarding my ailing 69 Beater, but I'm still nowhere.
Let me add to my original note (below) that I am also getting backfiring from
the Carbs and none in the exhaust - I neglected to mention this but am sure it
is important to a correct diagnosis. Further, I'm using a fair amount of
starter fluid to get it going and when I get backfiring in the carbs a lot of
black stuff is created - my thought on the black stuff is that it is just
carbon picked up by the starting fluid and spit out during the backfire.
Also, my understanding of the 25D dizzy is that the dog leg is off-set so that
it is impossible to install 180 deg. backwards.
Thanks for your patience and thoughts,

Subject: RE: Help Wanted, Inquire Within
Dear List,
I readily admit defeat but have not yet given up. My trusty 69 Roadster
Beater will not start and I don't have a clue. I've got spark, coil at 12V,
new points (gaped .015) , plugs (gapped .035) cap and condenser - I've set the
static timing at approximately 10 BTC. I've got the wires set up in the
1-3-4-2 order counter clock wise with #1 plugged in the cap just above the LT
wire. Carbs rebuilt over the winter.
I did have a problem with the 25D distributor which managed to become loose
over the winter. It worked its way out of the pinch collar so that the rotor
cam would move freely (I did turn the engine over a few times before I saw
that the rotor cam was not turning). I put it back in and tightened the pinch
collar (after the static timing fix) which is a pretty straight forward fix so
I don't think this is the problem.
Over the winter (while in the garage) the car became harder and harder to
start and once running ran rough but I figured the dizzy fix and the new bits
would make everything OK. Well, it ain't so and I'm here scratching my head
(and the little hair I have left) wondering what I've missed or am not seeing.
I do not consider myself to be a natural at this stuff so feel free to assume
I'm missing something real simple. I will really appreciate any help as I'm
at a dead end and loathe the thought of towing it to a lbc pro (with my luck
I'll run by a procession of Tr**mphs and M**t*s while the Beaters on the
hook!!!!).
Thanks,
A dumbfounded hick in PA
