Subject: OK, how do I do THIS???!!
Hi MG nuts,
I have the MOTHER of all MG problems in trying to reinstall my front
springs. First of all, the engine is out of the car, so the front end is
light. Now, in reinstalling the springs I have tried to put the spring up
inside the A-arms, then jack the spring pan up and bolt the pan in place.
However, there are several problems with this method:
1) the whole car is jacked up off the jackstands before the spring is
compressed sufficiently to bolt the spring pan in
2) it is possible to get the two front springpan bolts in but not the back ones
3) it is very hazardous, ie. the spring could pop out at any moment and I
would like to live to see my children
The OTHER method, which I read about in practical classics magazine, is to
undo the top trunnion pin and let the suspension assembly rest on the
ground. Then bolt in the spring pan completely, put the spring in, and jack
the A-arm up until you can reinsert the upper trunnion pin back in the shock
absorber arms. The problem with THIS is, I can't get the $%&^ upper
trunnion pin OUT of the trunnion. The manual says "gently tap the pin out".
Right. I have spent the last hour wailing away on it with a 5 lb.
sledgehammer and it has moved MAYBE 1/16". One of these methods has to work
for me or the car will be sent to the crusher as scrap. I have had it!
Any advice before I call the tow truck ???
