Dave,
Before you start swapping needles, Make one more attempt to adjust the
mixture by turning the jet adjusting screw richer by about 1/2 turn on each
carb then trying it. When it finally feels right (no need for the choke)
read the plugs after a solid run at about 3000 rpm, on the road for about 1
minute. Pull a plug and check the condition of the center electrode. It
should have a light coating on it about the color or a chocolate shake.
Darker means too rich, lighter means too lean. If in doubt about a final
setting, opt for the richer. You can live with a minor decrease in fuel
mileage a lot easier than holed pistons!
