I recently bought a 76 MG Midget, replacing the 74 I had to give up when I
got married several year back. I have determined the motor will need to be
rebuilt or replaced as it has very bad compression and burns oil like crazy.
I am saving up to do the engine work but want to be able to drive it every
once in a while until then. Can someone help me with my current problem:
After driving it for a while and getting hot (112 degree desert temp) it
acts like an old Ford I had as a kid and spits sputters and loses RPM and
power like it was vapor locking or starving for gas. I end up on the side of
the road when I try to take a hill when it does this. I let it sit for a
while and cool down and it runs ok again. On level ground it comes out of
it after some spits sputters and down shifting but is so embarrasing there
isn't room in the car for me to hide from the other drivers. I recall I had
a similar problem with my 74 but can not remember what I did to fix it. Can
anyone refresh my memory on this problem?
