Tappets are hardened. This means that there is a hard "skin" but the
inner metal is softer. If they are sufficiently worn to need
grinding, then the are worn through the hard. It's a good bet that
your camshaft is also gone if the tappets are that worn. I'd strongly
advise replacing all--parts cost shouldn't be over $100 if you use a
reground cam.
