I see nothing wrong with your concept for visually setting of carbs; however Edelbrock sells a perfectly good vacuum measuring device with a visual indicator, which is what Moss/Vicki Brit etc. sell in their catalogs. But why stick the end of a hose in your ear to tune carbs? Put a small metal funnel on the end of the tube. Put the funnel up to your ear and its easier to hear (your ear gets less dirty too.)
