Interesting. What would it take to adapt a manual transmission to a
northstar? When I was in Colorado I had a friend of a friend that came into
6 crated northstars but I was about a month away from finishing the 215 when
it happened and never pursued the northstar.

James,
The big thing with a Ford engine is the front Sump. Ususaly the
front x-member has to be chopped up a bit to make room for the oil-pan.
I have a modular 4.6L in my mustang, and I'm not all that impressed with
it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good engine, but there are a few others
I'd consider first:
Look for a Chevy LS-1 or LS-6. They are all-aluminum, have a rear-sump
(sort-of) and put out more HP than the 4.6L
or, look for a Cadillac Northstar, also aluminum, DOHC engine that puts
the 4.6L to shame in terms of smootheness.
Plenty of old people wreck their Cadillacs on a daily basis, so there is
no shortage of Northstars.
