Well I finally got them out, but I noticed something afterwords: On the
back two (inside the bellhousing area), there is a lip inside the bung
that prevents the plugs from flipping on their axis. Everytime I hit
the edge of the plug, I was just pressing it harder against the lip. On
one of the cups on the side of the block, I tried a slide hammer first,
but the cups were soft enough that the center of the cup would become
convex and then the screw would pull through. On the back two (in the
bellhousing area) I drilled a hole as close to the edge of the cup as I
could get and used the slide hammer there. That worked!! I think
hitting the rim with the hammer and punch first broke the adhesive loose
first. Thanks for the input. I'm still curious what all that black goopy crud on two of the plugs was, and why it was only on the two side plugs furthest to the rear??
