Well, a little more research has yeilded the following:
D&D does make a plate to adapt late model GM, Buick, Pontiac
auto-trannys to the Rover block, so assuming the slush-box fits into the
tunnel with no more than a little banging, the GM trannies are now
available to me.
Second, Ford makes two trannies that may serve my purpose: The AOD
(automatic, w/Overdrive) (the OD ratio is about 0.67 to 1) and the
AOD-E, which is an electronic-shift version which is apparently more
robust than the older AOD. Both of these bolt right onto the back of
the Ford 289/302/351 so no adapter-plate is required. I just need to
locate the dimensions. I believe they are mechanicaly related to the
C4, and they get the O/D by locking (or is it unlocking???) up one of
the planetary gears.
I'm still gonna put a t-5 in the roadster, but that's not the car in
which I plan on getting stuck in DC rush-hour traffic. I'll save that
for a GT donor car (Don't forget me, Dave) with AC. As it is, my left
thigh is about twice the size of the right one.
