Heavy or light is more a reference to the axles, which come in various
diameters than the gears or housings.
Nothing wrong with the stock MG rear, it is a Dana & very strong. Main
reason to swap is to get a different gear ratio to optimize the additional
power of a V8 (or V6), although the 3.90 ratio is a very good choice for 1/4
mile driving.

I have never heard of a "Heavy" or "light" or any difference between truck
and car axles other than a regular 9" and the Nodular 9" used int he high
end mustangs.
I would say the perfect axle to use is a late model mustang 8.8" rear. They
are common and axle ratios are easy to get aftermarket. And like Jim said
9" is overkill..
As for me I am still running the stock MGB rear with my 5.0L ford and
Mustang T5. It has held so far for 12 pretty stong drag stip passes. I ran
consistent 13.8 and 13.9 second runs.
