The U.S. MG guru, John Twist of University Motors says that the best
thing MG owners can do with their temp gauge is to cover it with black
tape. I believe he is trying to tell us that the gauges are not always
accurate.

Sometimes it is the gauge, sometimes it is the sender, sometimes it is
because Lucas made the wires, if an electric gauge.

Recommend a cheap aftermarket gauge as a test, temporarily installed. If
this reads as you expect it to, normal range, then start replacements,
sender first.

IMHO.

Alternate to the low mounted overflow tank is one, with bracket, from a
TR7, mounted on the firewall. You can get the tank higher than the
radiator, large hose T's into the heater line, small hose to the
radiator overflow.
