Bill,
Try connecting a jumper wire between the two terminals on the rheostat
and see if the dash lights come on. If that happens, then the rheostat
is bad or just dirty. Before buying a new one, remove it and carefully
bend back the tabs that hold it together and, using some contact
cleaner, clean the wire coil and the slider real well (really scrub
them, flooding them with cleaner and then working the slider back and
forth - then do it all over again). Reassemble the rheostat and see if
it works. Contrary to what the others have said, the dash lights work
very well through the rheostat in our TD after it had been cleaned. If
it doesn't, then it's time to order a new one.
<> Turn signals - first, go over the wiring very carefully to insure
that everything is wired correctly (including the switch - it is easy to
mis-wire the switch). If everything is wired correctly, and you have
power to the correct places, then see if the 12 volts is going through
the switch. If it is, insure that it is getting to the relay (both left
and right) and causes the relay to energize. If the relay is not
energizing in both directions, check the ground for the coils. If the
relay is energizing and the signals are not working, clean the contacts
with some of that contact cleaner left over from the rheostat. If you
find that the relay is shot, I can make one for you for considerably
less than what you can get one for from Moss or Abingdon.
To what the others have told you about restoring the turn signal switch,
I would add that there is a hold on adjustment screw centered between
the three terminals on the back end of the switch. The screw should
have plug of felt under it and by tightening the screw down on the
felt, you can increase the hold time of the switch if all else in the
switch is properly restored. If you can't get sufficient hold time, put
a drop of thin oil on the felt pad and try again.
