The SU Reference Catalogue from Burlen Fuel Services does indeed list a
piston spring for the TD. However, this is likely due to Burlen not offering
the heavier piston. The original SU specification sheet No. 549 shows a
piston/suction chamber combination WITHOUT a spring.

John,

Could you please recheck your reference and confirm that the AUC549 H2 
carburetors used in most TDs had springs?  I've never seen them in 
originally equipped TDs.  Perhaps Lawrie Alexander might help us out on 
this.
