Hi,

To make a long story short, I want to replace one of the head studs on
my '52 TD. Eastwood sells stud extractors in both SAE and Metric, and
I wanted to know if anybody on the list had a rec on which one to get.
I'm inclined towards metric, but don't want to find out the hard way
that I'm wrong.

In the interest of passing on knowledge I'll relate what happened to
bring me to replacing it...

I had my XPAG rebuilt, including machining a few years and a thousand
miles ago, and over time I noticed a coolant stain running down the
front right side of my nice, very red engine.

After torquing the nuts down a few times I was stumped, so I made the
Haj to my parents house where my father, (who owned a '51 for nearly
two decades before I was born) took a look at it and asked if the
machinist had replaced the head studs when he machined the block.

His theory was that the stud in question is the only one that goes
into a water channel, and if it hadn't been replaced it had become
stretched enough to allow coolant to migrate up the threads and then
drip down the head and block.

A check of my invoices indicated that for whatever reason the studs
were not replaced so dad's theory sounds good to me.

Anyway, back to my question: should I get the metric or SAE stud extractor?

Thanks in advance,

Scott Allen
